Improving Internet Governance Essay - 5246 Words

Introduction The Internet has become a vital utility allowing for a global exchange of knowledge, communication and commerce. To date, the internet lacks a unified global entity able to provide regulation and enforcement of web related issues. This is a major concern given the internet’s great importance and global influence. The United States should create an international joint body to control and govern the internet. There are several key issues that such a body would need to address. These key issues include; spyware problems, the downside of freedom of speech, illegal file sharing/distribution, regulation of adult material and hacker/terrorists attacks on the internet. Now that the super-powers of the world rely on the internet so vitally, it’s imperative to have a regulatory board to take a proactive stance to safeguard and ensure the integrity of the internet. Imagine one day if the internet were to disappear. Billions of people would be affected. Trillions of dollars would be lost. Basic utilities such as waste and transportation management would come to a standstill. Worldwide to local commerce would be greatly impacted even to the extent of a complete shutdown. For these reasons and many more, the internet needs a governing body. Spyware The first key issue that must be addressed is spyware. According to the ABA Journal, spyware is â€Å"software used to spy on someones computer activity. The most common spyware, also called adware, is generally little more than a nuisance, monitoring activity and installing advertisements on a PC.†(Krause 59). Spyware can cause many problems on the common house hold computer. The first major problem is performance of the computer. Spyware steals resources from a computer’s CPU which can lead to sluggish performance. The problem is even more evident on computers with less ram and slower processors. The second major problem is pop-ups. Spyware and adware are able to embed themselves deep within the computer’s memory and can be triggered to display annoying advertisements.
